After hiring a new employee, there is a transition process that can be difficult at times. To streamline this process and lay the groundwork for success, it’s important to have an effective onboarding procedure in place. Doing so is beneficial because new employees are likely to be more productive, and there’s often a higher retention rate. Here are some ways to ensure that new hires get started out on the right foot.

Provide an Employee Handbook

To begin, it’s smart to create an employee handbook that new hires can go over to get up-to-speed and reference whenever they need to. This doesn’t necessarily have to be elaborate, but should cover the basics and answer any frequently asked questions that new employees may have. Some topics you may want to cover include:

  • Company history
  • Company philosophy and mission
  • Code of conduct
  • Job duties
  • Attendance policies
  • List of contacts

You can either create a physical, paper employee handbook, or you may want to create an online resource. 

Explain Your Company Culture

Every business has a unique company culture, which is defined as being “the shared values and practices of the company’s employees.” In order for a new employee to mesh with your business right off the bat, it’s important that they have a clear idea of what your values and practices are.

During onboarding, it’s a good idea to explain what your company culture is and what a new hire needs to do to fit in with that culture. This should expedite team chemistry and help a new hire make connections with the rest of your staff.

Set Short- and Long-term Expectations

When an employee knows exactly what’s expected of them, they’re more likely to reach the productivity level you’re looking for, and you can avoid a lot of confusion. You can also minimize the number of setbacks as a new hire makes the transition. For the industrial industry, this might include hitting a certain production quota each day for the short term.

For the long term, this might include learning how to operate different types of machinery and handling inventory counts. Whatever your expectations may be, making them clear right out of the gate should keep new employees on track and maximize your overall productivity.

Provide a Mentor

Another way to reduce a person’s stress and help them fit in more easily is to assign a mentor who they can go to whenever they have questions or any other issues. The mentor will be their primary contact and can give them direction and advice as needed. This should be a progress booster and serve as a source of comfort throughout the initial phases.

By implementing some practical strategies, you can onboard employees effectively and help them fit in with the rest of your team.
